Learn to Play Hockey

Want to try hockey but haven't had the chance?

The Markham Waxers are pleased to offer a new Learn to Play Hockey program open to children born between 2012 and 2019. The program is designed for first time hockey players who have never registered in an organized hockey league. The eight sessions offer a low commitment opportunity for your child to explore the game of hockey before signing up for an organized league.

All of the on-ice skill development is designed based on the most current recommendations of the Hockey Canada Long Term Player Development Model, so you can trust that you child is receiving the most current programming offered. All program instructors are former or current coaches or players who have an extensive knowledge of the game of hockey and have many years of experience teaching it to young children in a fun and safe manner. The instructor to player ratio is on average 5-1.

The program runs for eight sessions on Saturdays from November 11 through January 20 at the Mt. Joy Community Centre in Markham. Each session is one hour long starting at 9:00 am. It is open to both male and female participants.

Session dates are

  • November 11
  • November 18
  • November 25
  • December 9
  • December 16
  • January 6
  • January 13
  • January 20

All participants must wear full hockey equipment, including CSA-approved helmet with face mask, mouth guard, and neck guard. Click here to see a full list of required equipment.
