What if an athlete has a suspected concussion?

Please refer to the Concussion Policy Flow Chart on how to recognize a concussion and the steps that need to be taken as soon as possible in order to rule out anything more severe.

If diagnosed with a concussion at the first medical appointment (ER, walk-in clinic, or family physician), please ensure that a referral is send to Holland Bloorview right away to gain access to the physician-led concussion care at Holland Bloorview. Download the Holland Bloorview Referral Form. The fax number is located at the top of the form. This follow-up care is only applicable to youth who completed baseline testing with their team at the start of the season with Holland Bloorview.

Special Note

Only players who have completed baseline testing with Holland Bloorview have access to the physician-led concussion care at Holland Bloorview.

If you do not choose to receive concussion care from Holland Bloorview, you still must follow the Markham Waxers Concussion Policy and protocols. These include physician or nurse practitioner diagnosis and return to play clearance. This ensures each child returns safely from a concussion and reduces the chance of further or secondary injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions: Baseline Testing

Download Waxers Baseline Testing and Early Care Program information.

Is baseline testing mandatory?

No, but the Waxers strongly recommend your child complete baseline testing in order to enroll in the program for the year. The cost for enrolling in the program is included in the Waxers fees.  If your child sustains a concussion you will then have access to the physician-led early care if a concussion is sustained at no additional cost for all care.

If we don’t attend baseline testing and my child suffers a concussion, am I still part of the program?

No. if your child does not complete the pre-injury baseline testing with their team or on the make-up date than they would not be able to access the early concussion care services at Holland Bloorview if a concussion was sustained within the year.

Why is baseline testing required to participate in the program?

The information gathered during the testing is part of the Early Care program.

How long does baseline testing take?

Your child will attend as part of his team. It takes an hour to test the entire team together.

Does the team have to be tested as a unit?

Yes. The current schedule allows for a one-hour testing period per Waxers team. Team timeslots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

What happens if my child cannot attend with his team?

At the end of the testing period, there will be two timeslots available for up to 30 players who missed their team appointment in Markham. The exact dates/times will be announced at the end of the testing program. After that, you will need to contact Holland-Bloorview for an individual appointment at their location in East York.
