Another hockey year came to a close as the Waxers U14 MD 2 White team added another trophy to their cabinet at the Ajax Pickering Spring Thaw tournament.
The team started the weekend off slow, losing their first game. But they bounced back and were strong throughout the rest of the tournament, qualifying for the gold medal game.
There they met their hometown friends, the U14 MD 1 Blue Waxers, in what was a game for the ages!
Blue came out aggressively, scoring early and leading 3-0 early in the second. But White never gave up, scoring three unanswered goals in return to tie the game with 13 minutes left in the third! But Blue kept at it and scored two more to take the lead 5-3 with only three minutes left in the third. But White was determined and #70 James M scored quickly to make it a one goal game again! Then, the unthinkable happened. With the goalie pulled and just 30 seconds remaining, #91 Lucas M completed a beautiful pass to #57 Jayson L, who backhanded the the puck upstairs to make it 5-5!
In the first 3-on-3 OT period, White were on their heels. But, thanks to the stellar play of goalie Connor K who stopped three breakaways, they survived!
After the five-minute sudden death period ended, the two teams advanced to 2-on-2 for three minutes to decide the winner! Early in the frame, #19 Gavin W found #93 Andrew E who was sprung on a breakaway! He skated around a diving goaltender to tuck the golden goal into the open net, making the U14 White the Champs!
The boys played with intensity, focus, and determination to complete not one but two amazing comebacks to ensure their season ended on the highest of notes!
