The Markham Waxers Atom AA team capped an
impressive 2018-19 season by capturing the York Simcoe Championship on Sunday
afternoon with a 3-2 win against Aurora in the deciding sixth game of the
series.
Following a disappointing loss in the OMHA playdowns, the boys rebounded to go undefeated through the first two rounds of the York Simcoe playoffs before setting up their rematch with Aurora. The boys played determined hockey throughout the series, and the finale proved as close and compelling as each of the first five games of the series, with the Waxers sealing the clinching victory with just 27 seconds remaining in the game.
Earning the gold medal was a deserving end to another season that saw the team continue to improve upon their accomplishments from the previous year. The boys began the season as silver medalists at the Vaughan Early Bird, reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Kitchener Oktoberfest tournament, and finished in first place during the YSMHL regular season.
The team will enter the Lakeshore Challenge with an overall record of 38-15-10-3.
Supported by a wonderful parent group, the coaching staff is very proud of the boys’ effort, dedication and teamwork throughout the season.
