It starts when I started playing house league...when I wasn't as good as I
am now. I was just learning how to skate. I didn’t even know how to snowplow. I
spent a lot of time on the ice...literally so “Superman” was my favourite drill. After a few years, I
decided to tryout for the Rostered Select Team because I thought I was ready,
and this is where my select journey begins.
Other than a few returning players, it was a brand new team, with brand new sponsors and of course a brand new coaching staff. We were officially WAXERS. We all looked pretty awesome in the uniform representing Markham. But looking good was the easy part.
We didn’t win a lot of games. In fact we only won 2 games in the entire season. We lost almost every game, but we didn’t give up. Coach Nicole reminds us every game to never give up, especially when we are “digging” and trying to get the puck. “Don’t Give Up,” she shouts from the bench.
WE DIDN’T GIVE UP.
One year later, we are pretty much the same team. We have a few new additions, but most of the players returned. WHY? It didn’t matter that we lost so many games. What mattered was that we had a ton of fun both on and off the ice. Tons of parties and celebrations through the years. We worked together to win a Grand Prize and got to skate at the Air Canada Centre. We got to feel like an NHL team for the day.
Our Coach Nicole is always positive and encourages us to be confident. Coach Brigid is fun to be around and is always cheering us on. Coach Callum teaches us to work hard. Coach Chris is always joking and saying funny things to us. It is the perfect balance. We have been training a lot harder this season. From more practices, to watching drills on YouTube, we definitely have improved a lot. We even have been on a “winning streak” lately.
The best part is playing and being with my friends. We cheer each other and support each from the bench. We give props and congratulate each player on the line when we have success. It is just a group of smart, funny kids that enjoy to laugh but most importantly we just want to play HOCKEY.
Go Waxers Go!
