Forward competing at OMHA Championships ahead of draft

Rickson Gracie, of the famed Gracie Jiu Jitsu family once said, “if size mattered, the elephant would be the king of the jungle.” These are words Ontario Hockey League teams should keep in mind when considering Jack Good in this year's priority draft. The 15-year-old from Pickering, Ont., stands just five-foot-seven but led the Markham Waxers U16 AAA team with 23 goals and 21 assists this season, propelling them to the OMHA championships. In the process he’s established himself as an intriguing prospect, one who coach Dan Daoust says shouldn’t be overlooked because of his size.

Standout defenceman competing at OMHA Championships

As the 2019 OMHA U13 AAA season ended, standout defenceman Frankie Marrelli celebrated the third championship of his young career with the Markham Waxers. Then COVID-19 hit, shutting down leagues, playoffs and championships during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Now he and the Waxers are back in championship play in their OHL draft year and in what could be his final season in minor hockey.

The Ontario Hockey Federation Board of Directors have made the decision to continue to maintain masking requirements, as outlined in the OHF Return to Hockey Framework, for the remainder of the 2021-22 Minor Hockey Season.

The Ontario Hockey Federation currently has in place a vaccination mandate for participants that are 12 years of age and older which is in alignment with the the Ontario Government’s vaccination requirement for sports facilities. The Government of Ontario's mandate ended on March 1, 2022. Despite this, the OHF will be maintaining its vaccination policy for the duration of the 2021-2022 season.

The Government of Ontario has announced that effective March 1, 2022 at 12:01 AM, the province will gradually ease restrictions while maintaining protective measures. As part of their community initiative this season, the Waxers U14 MD team is helping to shine light on the importance of inclusion and the eradication of racism in hockey while bringing awareness to The Hockey Diversity Alliance (HDA). The HDA is a group of current and former NHL players that promote diversity in sport and help raise awareness to end racism in the game we all love. Markham Skating Club is offering Saturday pay-per-session power skating during our Winter 2022 season. This is a great opportunity to compliment hockey programs with the flexibility to manage around different game and practice schedules and is open to all power skating skill levels!

The  first session is this Saturday, February 5th 8:10-9:00am and additional sessions are offered every Saturday 8:10-9:00am until the end of our winter season. Remember the deadline for registration is 6:00pm Friday prior to each session. Space is limited so register early! Contact the office for more details.

Pursuant to the Ontario Government’s recent announcement in which Premier, Doug Ford, outlined the gradual easing of public health measures, the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA) and Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) have been working closely with owners of arenas to coordinate the return to indoor hockey on January 31, 2022. In doing so, ORFA and OHF wish to provide additional guidance to owners of arenas, hockey associations, and the OHF Members. This information is intended to help guide discussions and planning amongst the stakeholders that we work most closely with to ensure the remainder of the 2021-22 hockey season is a success for all participants.  Read More

The City of Markham is re-opening its arenas on January 31.

Waxers Rep Hockey will resume on January 31.

Waxers House League hockey will resume operations beginning with U21 games on Friday, February 4, and followed by all other divisions on Saturday, February 5.

The City has imposed strict restrictions for returning. Please follow them exactly to prevent any more stringent measures from being implemented. The full text of the City's communication is included below, but please make special note of the following new requirements. Read More
