Minor Atom Selects win Grand Prize in “Ford Drills and Skills Competition”
Submitted By Deb Larsen on Sun 04 16, 17
We are thrilled to announce that our very own Markham Waxers Minor Atom Select team won the Grand Prize in the Ford Drills and Skills Competition that took place over the month of February 2017.

Local youth hockey teams were nominated for their commitment to helping out and being involved in the community.   The Minor Atom Selects chose to do an equipment drive and donate the equipment to the Markham Waxers.

The equipment will be sold at the annual equipment swap at affordable prices. All of the money raised will go to the Waxers "Yes, You Can Play!" program which provides financial assistance to children who would like to play hockey but otherwise don't have the means financially for registration fees. The added environmental benefit of the equipment drive is that it keeps used equipment out of our landfills and garbage.  The team collected over 15 hockey bags full of donated equipment!

As the Grand Prize winners, the team was one of 16 teams selected as leaders in their community, and will have an opportunity to train like a pro at the Air Canada Centre just like the Toronto Maple Leafs!  The exciting day will include on-ice drills and skills with the Toronto Maple Leafs development team, off-ice training, nutrition education, and a Leaf’s jersey for every player on the team! There is no date yet set for prize but will likely take place sometime in May or June.

The team would like to thank our Markham Waxers family as many of you donated equipment to the drive and/or voted for the team online.  We are very proud of these 17 special kids who worked so hard to win this opportunity and also worked hard to give back to the community.

Congratulations Minor Atom Selects!
