Congratulations to the Markham Waxers U15 MD2 team for bringing home the gold from the Bradford Blue and Gold Tournament!
What an exciting weekend of hockey for the U15 MD2 team as they faced off against teams all eager to take home the championship trophy. Players showed their strength, resilience, and teamwork to finish with a 2-1 record in the preliminaries. In the first preliminary game they met up against a hungry King Rebellion team. But paced by team Captain Zack C with a hat trick, they walked away with a convincing 5-2 win to open the tournament on a positive note.
The second day of the tournament saw the team face an unknown opponent, the Kent Cobras. Their name was menacing, their banter was intimidating, but our players stood up to the Cobras seemingly unaffected by their venom, winning the game in a convincing 5-2 fashion. The game did take its toll though as two players were lost to injury during the contest. After a lengthy break between games, the Waxers returned to the ice to face the Newmarket Renegades. Although the Waxers had bested the Renegades earlier in the regular season, the Newmarket squad was coming into this game on a high after winning both their round robin games. It was set up to be a hard-fought battle for first in the preliminary round and it didn’t disappoint. Each team took the lead at some point during the game but, in the end, the Renegades squeaked out a 3-2 victory. Even though the Waxers lost the game, they were through to the finals as the second seed.
The third day of the tournament would provide the Waxers with their chance to show the Renegades what they were made of. The team took to the ice standing tall and ready to leave everything out there. They struck first with a goal in the opening minutes and the energy in the arena was electric. Spectators, coaches, and players knew the team had come to win. With bullseye passes and shots on net from the blue line hitting their mark, the Waxers were unstoppable. From the first puck drop to the final buzzer, each member of the team had a clear vision, they wanted to win, and they worked together to make it a reality. When the final horn sounded, the Waxers had bested the Renegades by a score of 5-0 while outshooting them 38-9. They saved their best game for the last game of the tournament!
