As a teacher and coach in the elementary school system for over 28 years, I have significant understanding of the development of young minds and how to instill a growth mindset. A coach has succeeded when their players cannot wait to get to the arena to participate in high tempo activities. As well, a successful head coach ensures that every single player can identify their strengths and areas for improvement and work toward them. Communicating to players with respect and empathy allows each athlete the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them.
My assistant coaches and I will try to ensure that our coaching is strategically focused on the skills, techniques, strategies, and behaviours (mental training) that will assist our players to reach their performance and outcome goals. Practice plans are tailored to each player's individual needs with team goals in mind. By setting well thought-out process goals that are in line with Hockey Canada’s development model, our player’s self-confidence and development will be evident. My goal is that players will approach each day at the rink with enthusiasm.
My two, full-time assistant coaches are former, high level players with the Waxers: one defense and one goalie. Each assistant coach will focus specifically in the area in which they were trained. Weekly video sessions, as well as dryland training will also play a significant role in the development of my players.
