The Markham Waxers U13 Select team capped off an incredible weekend with a championship victory at the Northumberland Select Round-Up Tournament that took place from March 20 to 22!
Kingston Wong, one of the players on the U13 select team (and perhaps a future sports reporter?), provided the following report:
Despite out-shooting their opponents by a wide margin, the Waxers opened the tournament with a 1–1 tie, putting them in a must-win position to advance. They responded in dominant fashion with help from their coaches and exploded offensively over the next two games with contributions from every player, while the defense delivered back-to-back shutouts. The strong team effort secured the top seed and a spot in the semi-finals against a formidable opponent from Lakefield.
In the semi-final, the Waxers, on the back of a stellar goaltending performance, kept the game level before a late third-period goal broke the tie to seal the win.
The team delivered a complete performance in the championship game, scoring multiple times and shutting out Colborne. All three lines contributed offensively, the defence effectively shut down the opposition, and another outstanding effort in net secured the win. The Waxers played amazing, only letting in four goals throughout the course of the five tournament games.
The weekend was a true reflection of the team’s identity all season, playing selfless, disciplined, and composed hockey from start to finish. The players also showed great sportsmanship, cheering for and congratulating their opponents during the medal ceremony.
Join us in congratulating the U13 Select Waxers on their third tournament championship of the season as they continue their remarkable run.
