The
U18 MD1 team returned home with the Gold Medal from their sweep of the Bradford
Blue and Gold Tournament!
The route to gold began with a 5-2 win against Caledon Hawks Red followed by a close 2-1 victory over the Newmarket Renegade. A well-played game by Kanata had us on our heels to secure the third win with a final score of 3-2. With Caledon winning their game against Newmarket Saturday night 5-1 we knew the final game was going to be a nailbiter!
Championship game vs Caledon Red
Caledon was looking to bounce back from their game 1 loss against MD1 and were getting better with each game they played in the tournament.
Caledon worked to push the play but MD1 was able to
respond had many great opportunities to score before a brilliant tip from a
point shot put MD1 up 1-0.
By the end of the first Caledon had scored to tie the
game. With both teams pushing to score, MD1 Tournament MVP - Nolan
McIntosh, dangled around the defense and went top corner to put MD1 up
2-1.
In the 3rd period, both teams had their chances, but
MD1's shut down defense and strong forechecking limited any Caledon offensive
threat and Game MVP Goalie - Dominic Legall, shut the door on any shots that
made there way to the net.
Our coaches and parents all agreed it was a true
classic with both teams playing at a high level. Everyone on the roster
found a way to contribute to the wins throughout the tournament. It takes
an entire team to win a championship and these guys had each other’s back all
weekend long.
The U18 Waxer MD1 team performed at a high level
all tournament long, displaying a commitment to team defense, excellent puck
movement, and a coordinated attack with timely goal-scoring. They played
with an impassioned spirit, while always maintaining discipline and respect for
the on-ice officials and their opponents. This was a total team effort from
goal one.
