An Annual Tradition – Markham Waxers Minor Peewee Rostered Selects’ Terry Fox Run
Submitted by Amy Provvisionato Fellin
On September 16, 2018, the Markham
Waxers Minor Peewee Rostered Select Team and families gathered together to
participate in the Markham-Unionville Terry Fox Run. The
run has become a wonderful tradition for the Select Team and marks our
unofficial beginning of hockey season.
Before the run, the boys listened to speeches about the enduring legacy of one of our greatest Canadian heroes. Learning about Terry who, like them, was an athlete and the difference that he made was inspiring. For the run, each of the boys was given a Waxers t-shirt which quoted one of Terry’s most famous sayings - “I just wish people would realize that anything’s possible if you try; dreams are made possible if you try.”
Despite the near record 40 degree temperatures, the boys eagerly started the run and completed the five kilometres in a flash. Admittedly, the parents took a little more time to finish.
Most importantly, the team did a phenomenal job in raising over $1,600 to benefit cancer research which exceeded our fundraising goal. The boys are so grateful for the generous donations received. We hope that these gifts will help turn Terry’s dream of a cure for cancer into a reality.
Our team wants to specifically thank Jennifer Green and Jade Consulting for sponsoring our run, providing our amazing t-shirts and supplying the treats at the end of the run. Jennifer has participated in the run with her family for the last 12 years and first inspired the Waxers run. Her commitment to both our Waxers team and Terry’s cause is extraordinary and so appreciated.
Now, let the hockey season begin…
