Great Moments In Hockey... - by Chris Green
As Canadians hockey just seems to be in our
blood. So many great moments on the ice are forever ingrained in our collective
memories.
Sept 28th 1972: Paul Henderson scores for Canada and we win the Summit Series
2002 Olympics: Both the Men and Women make history and win Gold at Salt Lake City
Saturday, January 14th 2017: The Markham Waxers Minor Atom Select team shocks the world and
ties the mighty Stouffville Clippers 0-0 to earn our first point of the season.
A frenzied on ice celebration ensues.
Although it is true that many Stouffville players and fans were left confused and wondering why we were celebrating as though we had won the Stanley Cup – us – the parents, players, sponsors and fans of this wonderful group of young hockey players knew exactly why. We were all very proud!
The kids have put such effort in and every week they have continued to get better. The coaches continue to teach and push them hard every practice and it was so wonderful to see it all pay off and have the kids have such a wonderful reason to celebrate. I’m sure this is just the start of our winning ways. Congrats to all!
The team has been very busy as we have moved into the heart of the hockey season. In early December we had a team bowling party. It was a wonderful way for the kids and parents and siblings alike to bond. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and we should again thank the team Social Committee for putting together these wonderful events.
Recently the team got together to have Picture Day. I saw some pretty slick hairdos out there so it seems everyone was ready and eager to get the photos done in our wonderful blue Waxer uniforms. I’m sure we are all looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Just a quick reminder that the team has been entered into a couple of end of year hockey tournaments – the Stouffville Year Ender Bender and the Scarborough Shamrock Tournament. These are scheduled to take place in early April. The kids are really looking forward to having a chance to play in their first tournaments of the season and – for many of them – their first tournaments ever.
Thanks everyone and we’ll see you at the rink!
