We recognize that it can be expensive to play hockey. We want to ensure that every child who wants to play hockey has the opportunity to play hockey. There are organizations in Ontario which assist children to play organized sports such as hockey such as those listed below. Please contact them first if you need financial assistance. If you need assistance filling out the forms, please let us know—we can help.

In 2000 the Ontario Minor Hockey Foundation (OMHF) was created to support minor hockey players in the Province of Ontario. The Financial Subsidy Program provides financial assistance to minor hockey players who are currently experiencing difficulty raising enough funds to participate in the game.

  • All requests can only be made for players aged five to seventeen years old
  • No application will be considered unless all necessary documentation is received in full. The President of the local minor hockey association or governing body will be notified if there are any missing documents.
  • Any applicant will play one of four levels of hockey: House, Local, Select/Minor Development League and Representative.
  • Each grant will not exceed $300
  • Financial assistance will vary depending on each case
  • Financial subsidy cheques will be issued to the applicant’s local minor hockey association or governing body.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program

Canadian Tire JumpStart is a community-based charitable program that helps kids in financial need participate in organized sports and recreation activities such as hockey.

  • Applicants must be 5 to 18 years old
  • Funding up to $300 per child is available
  • A maximum of one program per child is allowed per season
  • Funding is available for different members of the same family during the same season
  • Funding approval is dependent on the financial situation of each child and will be determined by the JumpStart Committee

NHLPA Goals and Dreams Fund logo

NHLPA Goals and Dreams Fund

The NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund is the largest grassroots hockey assistance program in the world. Founded in 1999, Goals & Dreams has contributed over $21 million to grassroots hockey programs and related causes in 25 countries. Through the donation of equipment grants, the program has given more than 60,000 deserving children the opportunity to play hockey and benefit from the sport's commitment to teamwork, discipline and physical fitness.

KidSport Ontario logo

KidSport Ontario

Provides financial assistance in the form of a grant to an athlete between the ages of 6 and 18, to help him or her pay for registration fees and/or purchase equipment. Grants range in value from $50 to $250, and may be applied towards the participation in any sport activity that is affiliated with the sportalliance. KidSport funds are meant to complement, not replace, existing recreation or social services funding for participation in sport.

  • The KidSport grant covers up to $250 per child, per calendar year, to go towards registration fees and personal sports equipment.
  • Children 18 years old and under qualify for KidSport funding.
  • Applications must be submitted 45 days prior to activity start date.
  • The KidSport Ontario grant covers organized sports that are instructed by qualified coaches and that represent a sustainable sport experience.

Yes, You Can Play! program logo

MMHA Yes, You Can Play! Program

The MMHA may be able to provide additional financial assistance through the Yes, You Can Play! (YYCP!) program. MMHA requires a family to apply for one of the programs above before asking for financial assistance through the YYCP! program. We are a volunteer organization and rely on these organizations to review an applicant’ financial situation. Once approved by one of these organizations, contact us if you still need additional assistance.
