Season Update
Submitted By Deb Larsen on Friday, March 19, 2021

The City of Markham has reviewed their position on arena closures while York Region remains in the province's Red/Control zone. The City will open three ice pads: one pad at Thornhill Community Centre, one pad at Angus Glen Community Centre, and Centennial Community Centre. Obviously, this limits the number of hours available to user groups.

Prior to the lockdown, the Waxers had enough hours of ice available per week to run our entire program from house league through AAA. This was significantly lower than the number of hours per week during a normal hockey season. Given those hours and the restrictions imposed by both the City of Markham and the Ontario Hockey Federation while in the Red/Control Zone, we were able to provide one hour of ice per week to every registered player.

Under the current scenario, we are unable to offer even our abbreviated program to all registered players. We simply don’t have enough hours of ice. After considering all available options and reviewing our financial situation, the Board has opted to cancel the house league program and provide refunds to our registered house league players whose fees are paid in full.  In lieu of refunds, the rep program (U9 through U18 AE/MD-AAA) will continue with an abbreviated program similar to that offered prior to the lockdown in December—each rep player will be provided one hour of ice per week for seven weeks beginning March 27. Two AAA teams have opted out of the abbreviated program and players on those teams will receive a refund.

We are in the process of updating our financial records to determine the final refund amounts but expect the refunds to house league players to be between $250-$275/player and the AAA refunds to be between $190 and $200/player. The difference is due to the extra weeks that rep players had at the start of the season.

U11 and U18AAA players will receive a refund cheque made payable to the person who paid the registration fees at the address provided during registration. If this has changed since September, please email your updated address to [email protected].

In order to process refunds for registered house league players, please complete the 2020-2021 Season Refund form on the Waxers website at your earliest convenience. There are four options available to you for the processing of your refund.

  1. You can receive your refund as a credit to your child’s Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) record. The next time you register to play with the Waxers, your credit will be applied to the fees for that season.

  2. You can receive your refund as a credit to the credit card you used during the initial registration. If your credit card changed or was updated (e.g., your expiration date changed), we cannot process your refund as a credit to that credit card; you must opt for one of the other options.

  3. You can receive your refund in the form of a cheque made payable to the person who paid the registration fees and mailed to you.

  4. You can opt to donate your refund to the Waxers’ Yes, You Can Play! program to provide financial assistance for kids of families in need to play in house league with the Waxers.

This is not the solution we were hoping for but is the best solution for the association given the current circumstances. If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].

We thank you for your continued support during these trying times and wish you and your family a safe and healthy spring!
